You Can’t Think Your Way into a Regulated Nervous System

Why Understanding Your Trauma & Anxiety Isn’t Always Enough to Heal It

You’ve been to therapy before. You showed up, you felt the hard feelings, and you challenged all those unhelpful thoughts that were holding you back. So why do you still feel stuck?

You Can’t Think Your Way Out of a Nervous System Stuck in Overdrive

I’m Katy Dimple Manning, a somatic therapist who helps insightful, high-achieving clients finally get unstuck from anxiety, trauma, and perfectionism.

Most of my clients had tried therapy before working with me. And they found approaches like talk therapy and CBT really helpful… to a point. But then they plateaued.

They started wondering, “If I’m able to think better, why don’t I feel better?”

The Limitations of Talk Therapy

Talk therapy is an amazing resource for many clients. Supportive, humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral approaches are incredibly beneficial at helping people develop insights that improve their relationships, quality of life, and sense of self.

But after a while, many clients wind up asking themselves questions like:

  • I feel mentally better, so why am I still so on edge?

  • I know my emotion isn’t logical, so why can’t I talk myself out of it?

  • I’m kinder to myself, so why do I still have that nagging feeling that I’m not enough?

So they keep trying.

They talk it out, they journal, they pay attention to their emotions, and challenge their unhelpful thoughts. But underneath it all, the sense that something is wrong keeps tugging.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably tried some of these strategies too.

And that’s a really good thing! It means you’re showing up for yourself, developing insights, and honoring your needs.

But the logical part of your brain can’t convince your nervous system that you’re allowed to relax. That it’s okay to let your guard down. That you’re safe enough to exhale all the way.

“But the logical part of your brain can’t convince your nervous system that you’re allowed to relax.”

Please know: none of this is your fault.

You’re not stuck because you’re not good enough at therapy or because you’re not dedicated enough to stopping your unhelpful thoughts. This is just how brains work.

And that’s good news!

It means there are other pathways to getting unstuck from chronic anxiety and trauma symptoms that keep you from living life the way you want to. The way that feels most true to who you are.

Somatic Therapy Bridges the Gap Between Thinking Better and Feeling Better

In one of my somatic therapy trainings, the facilitator Dr. Abi Blakeslee stated that “80% of the information we take in is implicit.”

In other words, when your nervous system senses a threat, you may react to it without fully knowing how or why.

Intentionally Addressing the Root Causes of Anxiety and Trauma with Somatic Therapy

Implicit, procedural, emotional, and process-oriented movements and memories are stored in the body. And they show up without our intent or awareness.

Think about when someone’s telling a story. Their arms, hands, and facial expressions are involved. The words matter, but so do all the unspoken cues, like the intensity of the eyes or the tone of voice.

These are the messages we constantly send and receive without even realizing it.

The Key Difference Between Somatic and Talk Therapy

These implicit memories and nervous system reactions can be addressed in talk therapy.

By building a secure relationship with a trusted therapist over time, continuing to show up, and investigating your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, you send and receive so much implicit information that reaches your nervous system.

But without intentional focus on the nervous system, a lot goes unnoticed, and it takes longer to sense these benefits.

In contrast, Somatic Therapy directly targets implicit physiological patterns that keep you feeling stuck in a loop.

We help clients move beyond talking and thinking about changing so they can actually embody nervous system shifts in the present.

Many clients find this leads to deeper, and sometimes faster, results.

Curious how Somatic Therapy could help you get unstuck from frustrating patterns?

Starting a Dialogue with Your Nervous System

When you give your nervous system ample space to express itself, you start to learn how to listen to it.

You’ll notice patterns, like being stuck in a withdrawn flight response in relationships, even when you desperately crave support. Or sensing a strong need to please everyone else, even when you know intellectually that you deserve care too.

This goes beyond developing cognitive insight. Working mindfully with your nervous system, you develop a nonjudgmental felt sense of these patterns so you can actually start to untangle them.

When you work with your nervous system, rather than trying to talk it out of feeling hypervigilant, on edge, or shut down, you stumble upon a deep truth:

Given the right conditions, your nervous system has the capacity to heal.
